Top 10 Games Played in 2021

It has been a year… another pandemic filled year and I played games and found some new favourites.  Here are the top 10 games I played in 2021. Note, these are the top 10 I played in 2021 so this can include new releases, old games played for another time, old games that are new to me and games I somehow forgot about or anything in between.  My top 10 games that were released in 2021 would be very different (and may not even hit that magic 10).

Final Fantasy XV

You can see pink lines and dashes across the image and behind stands Noctis with a determined look on his face

I know this game is not to everyone’s tastes but I love it and the characters.  So this was a second playthrough technically – first on PlayStation but second of the game itself.  I fell down the hole of trying to do every side quest and hunt and avoiding the main story until I was much higher level than recommended and I loved it all over again.  I’m thinking about playing it in 2022 as well!  I really loved my time with Noctis, Prompto, Ignis and Gladio, and I’m hopeful that I’ll love the characters of the next Final Fantasy game I play in the same way.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart

I absolutely stormed through this doing everything but it was all I played from start to finish and all I could think about playing.  It was such a joy and another game that I want to play again.  I just love the dialogue and the different worlds you end up in.  There is something so joyful about Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and I just loved it.

The Last Acre

The three characters from the Last Acre hug. These are a blonde man, the red haired daughter and the grey puppy.

On a Game Pass kick I ended up spotting the beautiful The Last Acre.  It is a very short story but a beautiful gem.  The scenes are hand painted and it is a lovely little story that I would have probably missed had it not been on Game Pass.

Telling Lies

Ah those sweet little lies… Certain people have raved about FMV games and Telling Lies and a few others were on sale so picked them up expecting some fun for a few hours and to try something different.  I ended up loving Telling Lies (mixed on some others and really enjoying a few others) and it is such a cool game.  Trying to work out new words to get new clips and see everything was tricky so it did keep me guessing.

Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Remastered

The text reads "We're ready, Tengri!". Tengri is a purpl/blue dragon and Oliver, Pea, Esther, Swaine and Marcassin are on Tengri's back so they can fly to another location

So I started this again from the beginning as my save file was left from some day in 2019.  It could have stayed there but I started again and this time I completed the game.  It is such a brilliant story with wonderful characters.  The locations within the game are so well created and just bring a smile when you go somewhere new.  Plus, eventually, you get to fly on a dragon!

The squid boss is on top of a vehicle with red marks for where an attack will hit. The small vehicle you pilot is on the right of the ring you can move within.

This is a perfect “just one more go” game.  You hope that the next time you will find that last secret, get a higher score or better percentage accuracy.  The music keeps you going and the desire to get better just pushes you to try again.  I love this game even in amongst the frustration of failing tracks that you know well or being so close to getting an extra star and just missing out. I finally managed to get to 100% completion and still want to dip in and out every so often.

Forza Horizon 5

A blue Ford Focus is in the foreground as it races through a city street, a red car, green car and other blue car are behind it.

This is a fantastic addition to the Forza Horizon series.  It is a beautiful location, great races and events and brilliant cars to drive around in.  It is also a good game to drop in and out of if you are tight for time as I can jump in, just drive around or do a race then stop for the night.  Or you can do longer periods and time just flies.

Astro’s Playroom

A trophy screenshot for "Play Has No Limits" is shown. This is for finding an new artefact which Astro has. A PS5 and Astro are in shot.

This is a fabulous way to merge nostalgia with the introduction to the PS5 and new controller features.  I love Astro and seeing the items you could find or little hints of games and characters within the levels were so cool.  Also the feel of Astro ice skating was brilliant.

Spider-Man Miles Morales

Spider-Man on the right is following Miles Morales trough the city. Webs are seen around the image.

In another game with a great feel we reach Miles Morales. The feel of the web swinging through the city was fantastic once again. As an added bonus there was a beautiful Spider-Cat. A game that allows you to interact with cats will make it’s way up my list! It is one I’d really recommend if you are looking for some more Spider-Man style action.

Thomas Was Alone

The text reads "Thomas was connected to the internet for 12 seconds. And he had seen everything. He had seen the cats who couldn't spell, he had heard of the arrow through the knee. He felt that there was a thing called cake, but that it was a lie.". Thomas is a red rectangle and is seen with other characters, green and purple rectangles in a grey to black puzzle background.

This is a game that I went into not expecting much beyond a few fun puzzle levels and I ended up really emotionally connected to Thomas and his friends by the end. I really enjoyed the puzzles of getting everyone through each level and using everyone to their strengths. This isn’t one that takes too long from start to finish but it is well worth the journey. Also the voiceover by Danny Wallace is perfect, the words and his telling of them were simply brilliant.

What were your top games played in 2021?
