Seriously Geeky Sundays: Oh Captain, My Captain

This weeks Seriously Geeky Sundays prompt by Just Geeking By is dedicated to all the Captains we know and love.  Captain Picard is often one of the most iconic Captains in fandoms and a common favourite.  It’s nearly his birthday (13th July 2305) so let’s get prepared for it!

Who was the captain of your childhood?

I can’t remember the first Captains that I must have interacted with in films or childrens TV or books which is unfortunate. Though after much consideration Captain Hook must have been one from my childhood.  I remember wishing I was Tinkerbell so Captain Hook must have been within my knowledge.

When you think about captains who is the first one to come to mind?

Captain Sisko (Star Trek Deep Space Nine) or Captain Jack Sparrow.  They are the first to come to mind.  One is my husbands favourite Captain ever and the reason why I absolutely had to watch Deep Space Nine (though I still have to finish watching it).  Jack Sparrow is because of the fact that for ages at the end of term at school we would be able to watch a film in certain classes with only a few options…. Pirates of the Caribbean was one so I have seen the first 45-50 minutes of that film way too many times!  The conversation of

“You are without a doubt the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.”

“But you have heard of me”

is ingrained in my mind!

Who is your favourite fictional captain?

My favourites would be Captain Sisko and Picard from the Star Trek universes, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly) and Captain America.  I still can’t work out what exactly I love about these captains but they all have something that just makes me happy.

Who is your favourite crew?

Mass Effect Andromeda

The crew from any Mass Effect game or from The Outer Worlds.  They are all amazing.  Each adds something important to the crew that they belong to and it’s really nice to see them all come together.  Even if the atmosphere isn’t always perfect on board when arguments break out there is the potential to bring them back together.

What is your favourite ship?

The Normandy from the Mass Effect games.  An amazing ship that goes through one or two changes but with Joker at the controls it’s all good.

The last fandom you experienced has suddenly been cast at sea/into outer space. Who is the captain and who are their crewmates?

I really want to choose a random fandom but recently I have been playing the Uncharted series for the first time.  So for starters this would be an experience that goes from bad to worse before somehow getting back to normal.  However, I’m going to assume that Nathan Drake would name himself Captain even though Elena should take Captain position.  So perhaps they would work together on that?  Then you would have to have Sully, Chloe and Nadine along as crew.  Sure Nadine crosses Sully and Nathan but I reckon now he is legit and dealt with Rafe that she has the potential to be on side.  Maybe Sam Drake as well but he would probably take off with a lifeboat or something if he got a better offer but he did help Chloe so maybe he would support the crew.  I think Elena would do a good job of keeping people together and coming up with a plan but Nathan Drake has a reputation for danger following him so I suspect there could be problems.

  1. 🙈I remember those end of term videos watched at my school. Ours was Mrs Doubtfire or Hook. Clearly Robin Williams was a safe bet for kids. Watched the opening hour so many times in that period…

  2. Hook was so good! There really are so many Captains when you begin to think about it. Some great Captains listed there under favourites 🙂 I loved your description of the Uncharted characters in space!
