March gaming

The first quarter of the year is over. Where is the time going? No matter since this means I can talk about more games that I have played.

I mixed things up this month. I decided that I would take a break from Assassin’s Creed Origins (Xbox One), not because I wasn’t enjoying it but because having that and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (NS) on the go at the same time was making me feel bored and almost overwhelmed by massive open world’s. Two massive games at the same time is quite overwhelming and it was taking away from my enjoyment of them both. I stuck with Legend of Zelda because I had some more time in the game. I’m enjoying my strolls through Hyrule even when I get lost and trying to get through some side quests, shrines, Tarrey Town upgrades and upgrading my house. I doubt I will ever finish this game but for now I’m still moving forward with it. I even did my first Divine Beast this month. I had started another before but I was concerned I was too weak at that time to finish it off so left and haven’t gone back to that one yet but whilst I was in Rito Village I helped them out with that one. I am looking forward to getting back to Assassin’s Creed Origins but for now I need a break from that.

Then to add to this since I can’t just stick to one game I thought I would mix it up with a lot of shorter games that have been on my backlog for ages. This also meant that I have a few more completed games which is good for my resolutions.

I finished up Picross 3D (DS) again which was great fun. The puzzles were great and I enjoyed my time with it. It is such a nice puzzle game that I will probably go back to again at some point in the future.

I also got myself Life is Strange Before The Storm (Xbox One) and completed this and the bonus episode. I loved Life is Strange so heading back to Arcadia Bay again, this time to follow Chloe Price and Rachel Amber, was so enjoyable even if it was emotional. So much fun with these three episodes and with the Farewell bonus episode. I have a post planned on this because there is a lot I could say (and I have so many screenshots that I want to share).

I played through What Remains of Edith Finch (Xbox One) which was beautiful and emotional and just so well done. I have written a blog post on this to come out soon (again at the editing stage). This game really stuck with me as the story is so wonderful. It is a simple game with lots to find out.

I also started Superhot (Xbox One) as it was free on Games with Gold from mid March. I haven’t completed this yet but I’m really enjoying how it is done. Time moves when you do. You can act like a superhero to dodge bullets and take down the red enemies in a variety of ways. It is really wonderful so if you haven’t picked this up yet and you have Games with Gold go install it.

I started Firewatch (Xbox One) as well. It is a beautiful game, however I had to stop. The beginning of the game touched a nerve so I did a couple of within game days and I stopped for the moment as I was still thinking about the start. You know when a game just hits a bit too close to home at a given time that you need to stop for a bit? That is this game for me. I’m hoping to go back to it, although given my in game sense of direction at the moment I may never make my way through the story… You will find me just wandering the forest. I do hope to go back to this in the next few months to either carry on or restart as I really wouldn’t lose much but I need the nerve it touched to be a bit less in my mind.

Then in complete contrary to the point I made in the paragraph about Assassin’s Creed Origins and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild I started an open world game. I know I am a conflict here. I started it with Player 2’s suggestion. I wanted something different and something fun. I was worried an open world game would feel too much but it was still suggested. I didn’t feel like going into a big game like Gears of War or Dishonored that are still on my backlog but I wanted something new. I really should stick to one game at a time but I can’t seem to make myself do that. This game is Agents of Mayhem (Xbox One). It feels quite fast paced and fun just running round the map doing side quests like hostage rescue or destroying machinery or picking up cars. It also seems like a much smaller open world so it gives you freedom to move around but it isn’t so open that the map goes on and on.

I had a go with Sea of Thieves (Xbox One) when I managed to get into it last weekend. It was fine but as I was playing on my own (mostly) and getting lost I think I was missing out so I’m hoping some of my friends have picked it up and we can get a crew going. I did look at looking for group and, well, that is a story for another day as it left me feeling a bit isolated. Also given that I was playing this at the weekend with my very dodgy and painful wrist holding a controller wasn’t the easiest so it’s probably better that I wasn’t in for the long haul. It is a beautiful game though and with a crew will be so much fun. On to why I said I mostly played alone – Someone sank my ship when I was docked so that was the closest I made it to ship combat. I wasn’t on board at the time, I walked back to my ship to see someone firing on it. I boarded theirs and they didn’t like that idea either, reached a truce and sailed until they left the game about 5 minutes later which was nice but there was no chatting so was a bit hard to work out what their plan was. Given they left as well quite quickly it meant we just sailed in a line for about that much time.

I briefly started Thimbleweed Park (Xbox One). I was reminded recently that I had got this and not played it yet or so I thought (apparently earlier in March I had but had forgotten – it has been a busy month in the real world!). So I started it but I haven’t got far as I really needed to finish off this post (and sleep!). One to spend time with in April.

That has been my month of games. I have been a bit naughty and picked up a couple of games this month that I haven’t played yet so hopefully I will get to them soon. It’s been a bit difficult typing since last weekend as my wrist is only just getting back to normal so it’s been a bit quiet on the blog front. Hopefully I can get some of my planned posts finished and up soon.

What have you been playing this month? Let me know in the comments.

  1. That’s quite a list! I hope you find some peeps to play Sea of Thieves with soon and you enjoy Thimbleweed Park! I’ve just started The Sexy Brutale, seems fun so far, I hope to write about it at some point.

    1. I can’t believe I had forgotten playing Thimbleweed Park earlier in the month. I am looking forward to getting into it and spending more time with it. Getting friends online at the same time to play seems to be the main difficulty although I may try again with Looking for Group as plenty of people are playing Sea of Thieves.

I have heard good things about The Sexy Brutale but haven’t played it myself, so will keep an eye out for anything you write about it.

    1. Sea of Thieves is ok on your own. You can sail and explore but you miss something. If you are playing in a group it would be a much more enjoyable experience and would be the perfect game to have a laugh with friends.

Haha I did well this month finishing three games and nearly a fourth. I’m at an overall 80% complete on Agents of Mayhem and I’m thinking of trying to 100% it. Need to get grinding to level everyone up and carry on finding the crystals but “only” got another 150 crystals to go! But yes I do have plenty of long games on my backlog. I think my backlog will stay as long as ever this year but I am completing quite a few so overall it isn’t too bad.

  2. I know what you mean about Firewatch. That sort of feeling is what stopped me from ever wanting to go near That Dragon Cancer. Firewatch is a good game though, but that early feeling will be there throughout I would expect.

    1. I can’t go near That Dragon Cancer either. I want to go back to Firewatch but just not at the moment. It was just too much of a nerve, as the people I was thinking of weren’t suffering from early onset, but seeing those words come on screen just made it feel raw again. I’m glad it is a good game and I do want to play it but this is a game that time will tell me when I can try it again and if I can take it on from where I was and enjoy the rest without thinking of that early feeling. It looks so beautiful though.

  3. You’ve been busy, but it sounds like you’ve mostly had a good time gaming this month! I’ve heard some great things about a lot of those titles, though now that Thimbleweed Park’s on sale, you just reminded me that I need to pick that up soon. Sorry to hear about your wrist, too, and hope it’s feeling better even now.

My month has been a lot of Atelier games, though I’ve also been playing Legend of Legacy on the 3DS to stop myself from buying Alliance Alive (I love SaGa style games). I’ve been trying to hone down my usual game jumping so I can finish some of the stuff I started months ago- so I definitely get you, haha.

    Here’s to a great April!

    1. Haha a fellow game jumper. I just can’t solely play one game until I finish it. I didn’t used to jump around as many games but maybe one day I will stick to one at a time. It sounds like you have had a great month as well. I hope you pick up Thimbleweed Park and you enjoy it.

Thanks my wrist is better now with usual movement back which always helps.

  4. Impressive list of things you have going on! I made the mistake of trying to play Breath of the Wild with Horizon Zero Dawn last year. Let’s just say Aloy won my attention, sorry Link. My immediate gaming plans are finish Dragon Age Inquisition DLC, Metal Gear Solid 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and then give Breath of the Wild another shot. I will likely enjoy it more with nothing else going on while I’m playing it.
