Today’s post on the games of the year that I played in 2017 has been inspired as part of Later Levels Creative Christmas: a gaming collaboration who posed the following question: “You wake up the following morning, hungover but happy – you have an entire day of gaming ahead of you. You start thinking back over the video games you played during 2017; what was your game of the year?”.
Now a year is over and new one has begun I look back on 2017 and my game of the year. I did wonder how to do this as a lot of the games I played and enjoyed in 2017 were not from 2017. So I have decided to split it into my two games of the year, with one that was released in 2017 and one that was not but I played for the first time (or predominantly) in 2017.
To begin with my game of 2017 that wasn’t released in 2017 I would choose… *drum roll*… Gone Home: Console Edition (released 2016, even earlier on PC).
I had a fantastic time playing this game and would highly recommend it. It is driven by the story and you have to explore to find out about what has happened whilst you were away. It is not a long game and people may wonder about this being one of my games of the year but I thought it has a great atmosphere, the story is intriguing and gives you a desire to explore without pointing you in any specific direction and the commentary gives you some insight which is a fabulous touch. Honourable mentions also go to Forza Horizon 3 (released 2016) which I love the scenery, the races are fun and I can just spend lots of time driving around so all in all well worth it. Another game that deserves a mention is Hitman The Complete First Season (released 2016) as I have really enjoyed the locations, replaying episodes and trying to complete them in different ways.
I also have to admit that I haven’t managed to buy too many games that were released this year so my choices for game of 2017 were limited.
My game of 2017 that was released in 2017 has to be…. *drum roll* Super Mario Odyssey.
I did only get this on Christmas but it has been my go to game since then. It was one I was eager to play and I am enjoying it so much it had to be my game of the year. I am also spending a lot of time taking screenshots and pictures…
My original game of the year (prior to Christmas) was Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
Puzzles galore here and I have loved it. So, onto my honourable mentions, I have to include Mass Effect: Andromeda. I know it got criticised but I for one enjoyed it and spent a lot of time playing it. It was not a perfect game when I was playing it but it was well worth the time I spent on it but it is one that you have to be in it for the long haul and you may not want that.
Games that I would love to have on this list (or have the option to have on this list if I had played them) would include Assassin’s Creed Origins, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle. I feel that I would enjoy all of these games and they would be up there with my top games of the year. Maybe at the end of 2018 I can mention these as my games of the year that were not released in 2018… if I can get them and enjoy them all of course.
What was your game of the year? Let me know in the comments.
Super Mario Odyssey sure is a game which has to be on my list as well even though I never played it haha! Happy New Year!

I was pretty sure if I got to play it this year it would be on my list and if not it would be on my list next year. Happy new year to you too!

I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried at the end of Gone Home. Any game which manages that much emotion deserves to be on a GOTY list. 😉
Thanks so much for joining in over Christmas, and a very happy New Year to you!
